International Tea Day will be on the 21st of May and it is an important day for every tea producer. Despite being a relatively new celebration, International Tea Day commemorates significant progress the tea industry has made.

International Tea Day was first celebrated in 2005

The 1st International Tea Day was held in New Delhi, India in 2005 and was gradually adopted in various tea growing countries around the world. Later in 2015, the Indian government proposed to expand the observance of International Tea Day via the Food and Agriculture (FOA) Intergovernmental Group of Tea and finally in 2019, the United Nation’s General Assembly designated 21st May as International Tea Day.

International Tea Day celebrates the history and impact of tea

The history of tea dates back 5,000 years in China and has roots in many countries. The significance of tea as a cultural and economic force cannot be ignored. As the most popular beverage after water, the growing, processing and consumption of tea is a tremendous source of income for many countries. Additionally, tea is used in various cultures around the world for significant events, ranging for simple meet-ups to weddings and global functions.

BOH started producing tea in Malaysia in 1929 and we have grown to become Malaysia’s largest tea producer, making approximately 5.5 million cups a day. With nearly 100 years operating in Malaysia, BOH has grown to be a part of Malaysia’s tea drinking culture, as generations have continued to enjoy their cups of BOH tea.

Our tea gardens In the Cameron Highlands are also one of the most popular tourists’ attractions in the region as many local and foreign tourists visit our tea gardens to bask in the beautiful scenery and enjoy a cup of fresh tea in our Sungei Palas and BOH Tea Centres.

The significance of International Tea Day 2022

According to the FAO, the purpose of International Tea Day is to “promote the sustainable production, consumption and trade of tea, and offers an opportunity for actors at global, regional and national levels to ensure that the tea sector continues to play a role in reducing extreme poverty, fighting hunger and safeguarding natural resources.”

The UN expands on the message shared by FOA on International Tea Day as a day to “promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favour of the sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty.”

As a tea producer, BOH supports the efforts by the UN and FOA and we hope that the message of International Tea Day will continue to spread and garner greater recognition for the people who work tirelessly to give us that perfect cup of tea.

Going Green with Recycling https://bohtea.com/published-articles/going-green-with-recycling/ https://bohtea.com/published-articles/going-green-with-recycling/#respond Sun, 27 Feb 2022 23:00:15 +0000 https://bohtea.com/?p=4229 Going Green with Recycling Read More »

]]>

Most of us can agree that recycling is a step in the right direction to reduce greenhouse gases. Gradually, people have started to recycle at homes, offices, and even public areas. However, more can be done to raise awareness on how best to recycle products so that it can be done efficiently. Here are some tips to help you on your recycling journey.

Tip 1: Read the instructions on the packaging

  • Most products come sealed in a protective packaging, be it food items, electronics, etc. If the packaging is recyclable, it will state what part of it is recyclable with the corresponding recycling symbol and number. For example, BOH’s boxes, sachets and pouches are recyclable and can be easily disposed of in the correct recycle bins. The tear box teas should be placed in the paper recycle bin, while the tea sachets and pouches can be placed in the plastic recycle bin. Having a quick look at the packaging instructions can help save you some time when you are sorting out your recyclables.

Tip 2: No liquids or food leftovers in your recycling

  • Containers, particularly plastic, with any food or grease residue cannot be recycled. This is because food items can spoil or rot which can lead to contamination during the recycling process. It is highly recommended that you rinse your recyclables with water before placing them in their proper recycling bins. For food scraps, there are other environmentally friendly ways to dispose of them such as composting.

Tip 3: Your old electronics can be recycled

  • Old handphones, laptops and TVs made up almost 59 million tons in e-waste (electronic waste) in 2019, but only 17.4% of those were collected and recycled. However, e-waste has valuable materials such as copper wire and precious metals which are now in high demand due to soaring prices. There are a few options on how best to treat e-waste. Firstly, you should remove important data from devices or transfer the data to separate device or cloud server. If any of your devices are old but still on good working condition, you can consider donating them to charities. If your electronics have reached the end of their life cycle, you can look at trading them in (which is a popular option for mobile devices) or find an e-waste recycler in your area to dispose of them.

On Global Recycling Day this 18th March, let us all continue to raise awareness on recycling and keep up our efforts to keep our planet cleaner and healthier. Happy Global Recycling Day!

With most of us being cooped up at home for nearly 2 years, 2022 has many people excited.

Here are some of the activities everyone is looking forward to do in 2022.

1. Travelling and ‘Balik Kampung’

Travelling is back! Either domestic or international travel, we all miss adventuring to a new city or just going back to a familiar place we love. Destinations like Cameron Highlands hold a special place for many people and we cannot wait to enjoy the cool breeze while sipping on a cup of tea in the BOH Sungei Palas Tea Centre.

We can also finally go back to our hometowns to see our relatives. Malaysians love to balik kampung to see our parents and grandparents during the holidays and special occasions.

2. Outdoor Sports

Many took to exercising at home to keep up their fitness during the lockdown, but we had to give up on outdoor sporting activities. We could only watch football, basketball or any of our preferred sports through the tele, but nothing beats joining in and actually playing the sport we love. I cannot wait to kick a football again!

3. Going out to Eat

The cooking skills we developed after the countless meals we had to prepare for the family or for ourselves has made many of us proud home chefs. But we also miss being treated to a nice meal for a special occasion in a café or restaurant. Having the chance to dine out once in a while is something we can look forward soon.

4. Returning to the Cinemas

Even though streaming services have become the norm, nothing beats going to the cinemas to catch the latest movies. Going to the cinemas used to be a family or social event and so many of us are looking forward to watching movies on the big screen again.

5. Just enjoying the Outside

After months of staying indoors, having the freedom to go out and take in the outdoors feels like a blessing. We took for granted the simple things which were taken from us during the pandemic so being able to just leave home feels refreshing. However, COVID-19 is still a serious treat so regardless whatever you are doing, always remember when you are outside to wear a mask, mind your distance and take care of your hygiene.
