The Importance of International Tea Day

Importance of International Tea Day

International Tea Day, celebrated annually on 21 May, holds special significance for all of us at BOH, as well as for tea producers and stakeholders across the industry.

For BOH, tea is deeply woven into our history, our community, and the land on which it is grown. Far more than just another date on the calendar, it is an occasion to honour the craft of tea-making, the people behind it, and the rich heritage we have upheld since 1929.

International Tea Day

A Day with Deep Roots

The first International Tea Day was held in 2005 in tea-producing countries such as India and Sri Lanka. It was created to raise awareness about the challenges faced by tea workers and to support fair practices in the industry. In 2019, the United Nations officially declared May 21 as International Tea Day. The day recognises how tea supports rural development, jobs, and communities in many parts of the world.

For us at BOH, it is a reminder of our role and responsibility. Our care for the people who grow and process our tea and our commitment to protect the environment that helps it thrive.

The Significance of International Tea Day

International Tea Day is a time to:

  • Honour our tea growers and workers, whose dedication makes every cup possible
  • Highlight sustainable farming practices of our tea gardens and our commitment to improve the way we cultivate, produce, and preserve tea culture
  • Celebrate Malaysia’s tea heritage, spanning over 95 years of craftsmanship

At BOH, this day serves as a meaningful reminder of our responsibility to preserve the legacy of tea while shaping a sustainable future.

@bohteamalaysia Not all therapy comes with a couch. Sometimes, it’s found in a warm sip, a deep breath, and the gentle care of those who grow and craft each leaf. This International Tea Day, we raise our cups to the real heroes of tea-rapy, our tea workers. Thank you, from the tea bushes to our teacups. 🌱🫶 #BOH #bohteamalaysia #BOHTea #Tea ♬ slow piano music(1297827) - syummacha
